My name is Craig Cornelsen and I have the privilege of serving as the Youth Pastor here at Rosenort Fellowship Chapel! We thought it might be a good idea to have a bit of a write up to introduce my wife, Laura and I for those who aren’t familiar with who we are. So let’s try this!
As mentioned my name is Craig, I am 29 years old, I am a Mennonite “Rosenorter” through and through, but most importantly I am a follower of Jesus Christ. My parents and grandparents both grew up in Rosenort as well and have been steadily involved at RFC. I am very thankful and proud of my heritage within this community. That being said, I didn’t always see it that way growing up! I often thought that our little town and church was BORING, with not enough action or cool stuff happening on a regular basis. I’m thankful my perspective has changed.
I LOVE sports and athletics - especially hockey! Over the years I have been lucky to play a lot of hockey and as a result have experienced many different communities across western Canada through playing Junior and then College hockey. When I was 21 years old, I decided to attend Briercrest Bible College where I where I was recruited to play for their hockey team, and I literally had the time of my life! For the first time, I was able to combine my faith with sport and skated alongside like-minded teammates. It was exactly where I needed to be. After three years of Bible school, I made the decision to transfer to the University of Alberta - Augustana Campus in Camrose, Alberta to play for a higher level team. It was at this college where I would meet a very beautiful girl, from a nearby farming community named, Laura Kvemshagen (she is of Norwegian descent! Needless to say I had no clue how to pronounce her name when I first read it…). Let’s talk about her now :)
Laura is 23 years old (yes, I “robbed the cradle”!) and is also a follower of Jesus Christ. As of July 2017, she is officially a Registered Massage Therapist as well as an expectant mom! To sum it up, she's THE BEST. As I said, we met at university in Camrose, Alberta, where she was also following her lifelong passion for sport in playing for the volleyball team on campus. We met, dated and ended up getting married on July 26, 2014! I am so thankful for her and the gifts she shares with me on a daily basis - she might be the most patient and gentle person in the world! I have to brag about her goofy sense of humor too… she even laughs at my jokes which speaks to her generosity ;).
We ended up moving back to Manitoba in the spring of 2015 and decided to attend my home church, Rosenort Fellowship Chapel. We were approached by the leadership team asking if we would be interested in taking on a leadership role with the Sr Youth program as their current Youth Pastor had given his notice and was moving on. After much prayer and consideration, Laura and I decided to go for it!
Looking back after two years of volunteer ministry we are SO GLAD we decided to get involved! God has taught us so much through our friendships with the youth and stretched and grown us in so many ways. The RFC Youth program has been an incredible blessing to Laura and I, which is why we are all kinds of excited that I get to start this new journey as a part-time Youth Pastor at RFC as of July 2017! I am pumped to have more time to plan, organize and prepare for youth events as well as time to invest more in relationship building with the youth.
I believe wholeheartedly that my youth group experience through high school helped instill my core beliefs and values before leaving home at 18 years old. Seeds of spiritual truth were planting in my heart during youth that I am very thankful have taken root and grown over the course of my life since. Youth group was a key part in my spiritual development and understanding of my need for Christ. Therefore, recognizing the impact it had on my life, I am passionate about communicating and journeying through that same gospel message with our youth today as they prepare to head out into a broken world as adults.
So that’s a little bit about us and how we got here!
